What is a plug valve
A plug valve, also named cock valve, can be cylindrical or conical in shape and is turned inside the valve body to control fluid flow. When a plug valve is open, one or more hollow passages are generally arranged horizontally to allow easy flow through the valve.
The two-port plug valve with an open and closed setting is the most common design. The two ports are typically on opposing sides of the valve, with one passageway flowing from inbound to outbound and the stem and handle on top. A quarter-turn valve is also used by a plug valve, which is beneficial when frequent action is required. Valve ends might be flanged, hub-style, or butt weld.
How does plug valve work
The plug valve is a kind of valve which uses the plug with through hole as the opening and closing part. The plug rotates with the valve stem to realize the opening and closing action. The plug of the plug valve is mostly cone (also cylinder). The sealing pair is matched with the conical hole surface of the valve body. Plug valve is one of the earliest used valves. It has the advantages of simple structure, small size, fast opening and closing, low fluid flow resistance, but it is difficult to process and maintain. The ordinary plug valve is sealed by the direct contact between the finished metal plug body and the valve body, so the sealing performance is poor. The opening and closing force is large, it needs a large rotating torque, and it is easy to wear.
The main advantages of plug valve are as follows:
1. Plug valve is used for frequent operation, which can be opened and closed quickly and easily.
2. The flow resistance of plug valve is small.
3. Plug valve has the advantages of simple structure, small volume, light weight and easy maintenance.
4. It is not limited by the installation direction, and the flow direction of the medium can be arbitrary.
5. No vibration and low noise.
Plug valve can be divided into straight through type, three-way type, four-way type and so on. The straight through type controls the medium flow on the straight pipe section, and the three-way and four-way types can be used to distribute the medium and change its flow direction.
The working principle of the plug valve is that the plug rotates around the center line of the valve body, and the corresponding relationship between the opening on the cock body and the opening at both ends of the valve body is used to achieve the purpose of opening and closing.
